This multi-award winning project consists of 6.5 miles of flood protection improvements adjacent to the San Francisco Bay and several tidal sloughs along existing levee and floodwall alignments. Construction included 22,100 LF of steel sheet pile floodwall installation, over 4,000 LF of concrete floodwalls and mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls, and over 5,000 LF of embankment construction using earthen fill and lightweight cellular concrete. The project also incorporated three design-build bridge structures for pedestrians and vehicles, pavement, landscaping and irrigation, and recreational amenities along the San Francisco Bay Trail.
In addition to raising the levee, the project includes the redevelopment and widening of the existing Bay Trail and construction of two bridges to increase tidal circulation to enhance the O’Neill Slough in the southern segment of the project site. The project consists of extensive public outreach and permit compliance from four major agencies: State Lands Commission (SLC), the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB), the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
